"It is important to nurture any new ideas and initiatives which can make a difference for Africa."

Wangari Maathai

Mkwiro village is in Wasini Island in the South Coast of Kenya, with a population of approximately 1200 persons. The major challenge in this community is lack of drinking water owing to geographical location. Fresh water is sourced through harvesting rain water and then stored in the underground tanks. During the dry seasons, all the water reserves are exhausted forcing the villagers to cross to Shimoni in search of water for consumption.

In 2007-2009 Mafanikio in partnership with GRA Charity joined hands with the local community to address this problem, however, it was faced by unforseen challenges due to the nature of salinity in the area. As a means to correct it, desalination technology was sort to address it, however, given that it was new technology, it was not able to succeed. Therefore in the end, it failed.

Fast forward this reverse osmosis technology was later applied by private institution and the community has access to clean drinking water. After all, this technology would eventually be embraced in the end.
