"It is important to nurture any new ideas and initiatives which can make a difference for Africa."

Wangari Maathai

The basis of Mafanikio conception was instigated by the Kirasha community which at the time was faced by an unusual situation of internally displaced persons from the post-election violence in 2002. Kirasha is in Kamae, Lari constituency, Kiambu County. These were families which were relocated by the government after losing lives of their beloved and properties in their previous homes. Most of the households consisted women and children since most of their husbands had been killed. The families lived in a shanty area within the village with poor sanitation but the catch was in the weather conditions which were very hostile to the children because of the intensity of the wet weather.

Mafanikio together with Kirasha Rehabilitation centre worked with the community to empower the youth and the women through communal farming and trainings. Together with GRA Ireland, provided an education platform where children were able to continue with their education. The year was 2003 to 2006.

The project completed in 2012 after the students completed high school. IT was ranked as successful after 60% of the children transitioned to the secondary school and 29% to tertiary and university level. Most of their parents were able to get on their feet and eventually relocating to conducive environment. We boast of the alumni from this community who are now responsible and respected members of the community who are always participating in community development on the decision-making level.
